Zhu Xi’s Cultural Studies (Wuyishan Neo-Confucian Site) Study Course (Wuyishan): Teaching Objectives, Curriculum and Task List

Zhu Xi’s cultural research takes Wufu Town in Wuyi Mountain as the scene: the young Zhu Xi lived and lectured here for nearly fifty years. Students studied Neo-Confucianism from study to official school in Zhu Zi Lane, Xingxian Ancient Street and Jingshe Ruins.

Applicable to junior high school and high school students; Wufu Town is about 40 minutes’ drive from the main scenic spot and takes half a day alone.

Teaching goals and literacy goals

  • Cultural inheritance: understanding the development logic of Zhu Xi’s Neo-Confucianism from personal cultivation to the academy system
  • Classical recitation: Selected passages to recite and annotate to train classical Chinese reading instead of recitation competition
  • Spatial cognition: Put the "reading place" into the specific architecture and landscape pattern
  • Practical output: The group completed a copy of the "Science Map" and a collection of excerpt annotations

Available school stages: junior high school and high school. The teaching objectives are written into each plan hierarchically by school stage, and should be confirmed with the school before leaving the group.

  • Xingxian Ancient Street
  • Wuyi Jingshe Ruins (Next to Jiuqu River)

Operational guarantee

  • The drive from Wufu Town takes about 40 minutes, and all vehicles must be used; leave room for roads in mountainous areas
  • The stone slabs in the lanes of the ancient town are slippery, so drive slowly; do not enter residents’ private areas
  • The Rainy Day Jingshe ruins section will be changed to include indoor recitations in the town, and a plan for the moving route will be written in advance
  • There is 1 study instructor for every 50 students, and additional teachers accompanying the school

Frequent issues between schools and parents

Can primary school students take Zhu Xi classes?
Senior students can move down to different levels based on reading, and the task list is mainly based on excerpts from "Zhu Xi's Family Instructions" plus picture book-style drawings; for lower students, tea culture themes are recommended.
Can zhuzi and tea be arranged on the same day?
Not recommended: both sites are in Wuyi Mountain but the mission density is high; each day's schedule is complete.
